Barbie’s big comeback

| 25 February , 2009 | 2 Replies

Okay, I’m going to be doing a couple of posts on Barbie, because seriously the world has gone Barbie mad.  I’ve been saving these posts for a few months and now it’s just gotten bigger than Fashion Week so I’m going to have to split them up.

Firstly, Barbie is turning 50 and to mark that awesome milestone, Barbie has teamed up with Stila to celebrate.  Now if I’d written about it when I first heard the news, the range was only available exclusively at Sephora and it would have been a big boo hoo for us here in Oz, but Mecca Cosmetica have come to our rescue and have the Limited Edition Barbie Can for A$89 each.  The only product not available here is the Barbie Loves Stila Talking Palette – the palette has four wet/dry eyeshadows and a glitter eyeliner (this is sooo in right now) and apparently it literally talks you through each application step!

The fun and flirty collection includes four “Decades of Beauty” cans: Ponytail Doll, which commemorates the first Barbie in 1959; Malibu Barbie, from 1971; Foxy Doll, in honor of the first African-American doll released in 1980; and Jewel Doll, from 2000.

Now no matter what we may think about Barbie, I grew up with Barbie dolls and when you’re a child that’s all the toys are to you, fun and entertainment, there’s none of this feminism stuff going on when you’re 5-12!  Barbie is a brilliant brand, she’s lasted 50 years (without botox!) and as a doll obsessed little girl my intellect or self image was not destroyed because I played with Barbies and we cannot help it if Paris Hilton thinks she’s one!

In 2007 Barbie also collaborated with MAC and produced a Limited Edition MAC line – now check out these images and tell me what you think?  I think they look absolutely awesome and the girls look like Barbie … if I tried this look I would not be successful with my application and would most certainly look like a clown!

And check out all these Stila palettes aren’t they just gorgeous?  More pretty things for my walk-in dresser!

My next post will be about the recent Barbie inspired fashion show featuring selected designers’ homage to the fashion muse at New York Fashion Week and a number of other fun and girlie stuff going on in the Barbie world … stay tuned, you will be surprised.

Barbie continues to be a genius toy, especially since girls like to imagine themselves grown up and Barbie helps them do that
