Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of heading into the City to Doyle’s at Circular Quay with my intern for the week, Corrine, to meet Jessica Watson, the inspiring and incredibly courageous 16 year old who is going to sail around the globe, solo, non-stop, unassisted traveling 23,000 nautical miles over eight months. Phew!
Jessica sailed into the harbour on her pink boat, Ella’s Pink Lady, to a media scrum and we were so excited to be part of that. It was such a divine day and we are so lucky because it’s been so wet and windy in Sydney the past couple of days.
Australia’s Surf Legend Layne Beachley (who we all just love love) did a Q&A with Jessica and seriously Jessica comes across as being amazingly mature for her young 16 years. Her dream of setting out to become the youngest ever person to sail around the globe has polarised Australia in their views but you know sometimes people come along in life that are just meant to do what they are meant to do at a young age. I could never do it and I take my hat off to her, this is her dream and I think it’s so awesome that she has such incredible self belief. She has identified her dream and just gone for it – how many of us do that in life? When asked what worried her the most, she said her parents worrying about her but we can’t blame them for that now can we?
And remember Jesse Martin? In 1999 when he was just 18 when he sailed into the record books to became the youngest person in history to circumnavigate the globe solo, nonstop and unassisted in his 34-foot yacht Lionheart … well he was there yesterday to cheer Jessica on and show his support for her epic journey.
Jessica is an amazingly laid back young woman considering the daunting journey she is about to embark on (typical of the young I say), she is being supported by an amazing team of people including Ella Bache who have sponsored her and of course provided her with tonnes of skincare products to look after her skin as she’s travelling. And as you can see from the media scrum below, she’s got everyone interested.
You can follow Jessica and her journey from her website, she is going to be online as she’s travelling, she reckons she’s going to have no time to feel lonely. Between sailing Ella’s Pink Lady, catnapping, slapping on the sunscreen, keeping in contact with everyone and may be squeezing in some school work (hehe) she’ll be back on our shores before we know it!
Big cheers to Jessica fulfilling her dream she’s had since she was 11 years old …
