The second novel from author Kerry Reichs, The Good Luck Girl is a heartwarming story of self discovery, second chances and realising that just being true to yourself is sometimes the best thing you could ever do.

It is the story of 26 year old Maeve Connelly. After taking an inordinate amount of time to finish college, Maeve now can’t decide exactly what she wants to do with her life. Tired of being labelled irresponsible and wanting to prove to her friends and family that she can make something of herself Maeve sets off on an impromptu trip across country headed for LA. Once there she figures she will show those who doubt her that she has what it takes to make a success of her life after all. But of course nothing is that simple.

The Good Luck Girl

When car trouble strikes she finds herself stranded – with no money and no immediate way of getting the car fixed in a town called Unknown, Arizona.

Maeve will now need all her wits about her to make some money and get back on the road as quickly as possible. Life, however, has a habit of changing even the best laid plans and soon Maeve finds herself in a life that she wasn’t looking for but perhaps needed all along.

As she ponders her future, her past threatens to creep in – forcing Maeve to acknowledge what she is really running from. As she struggles to come to terms with the fact that sharing your troubles is sometimes better than keeping it all inside, she still feels the pressure of completing what she set out to do.

At times hilarious, at times heart breaking, this is a great story that made me want to keep reading non-stop til the last page. The characters are so rich and full of life that you feel as if they could jump off the pages – you really like them (yes, all of them!) and care about what happens to them. The story has its fair share of twists and turns but all of it is compelling and believable. It gives you the sense that a friend is telling you their story – and the feeling that it could all happen to you someday if you give happiness a chance.

The Good Luck Girl in summary is a great girlie read – one that I would recommend to my mum, sisters and girlfriends – and should be the first thing you grab for your next holiday or lazy day at home.
