Tammerly Holmes, Pink Diva Makeup
Jay Jay Rauwenhoff is an international makeup artist with over 20 years experience in the fashion and wedding industries and while you might not have heard the name, chances are you will. Jay Jay works across fashion & beauty publications, catwalk, advertising, catalogues, TV commercials and has worked with A-list Australian celebrities such as Sophie Monk, Catriona Rountree, Jodi Mears, Erica Packer, Tara Moss, Megan Gale, Lara Bingle, Sophie Faulkner, Olivia Newton John and Jackie O.
Having just opened her first makeup school, Jay Jay Makeup Academy and a makeup line in the works, Jay Jay is going to make the beauty industry even more beautiful. She has trained in Paris and travelled the world to locations that many of us could only dream of *sigh*.
We were lucky enough to ask her a few questions about how she got started as well as what’s next on the agenda and this is what she said:
Traveling abroad for work must be exciting. Did it teach you new things in the industry?
Yes I am actually working on getting my own brand by the end of the year so I love traveling and seeing what is new overseas. As a result, I always travel to Europe to visit my family in Holland and love researching new beauty trends in Paris and Milano.
You love the natural look. Is it easy to master?
Yes, you\’re spot on! It\’s iconic because in order create the natural look it can be harder than creating a glamourous beauty look as you need to understand and choose appropriate colours keeping in mind different individual’s skin pigmentation. So, a natural look can be very difficult.
The 80\’s hair and makeup are back with a vengeance. How can readers revive the 80\’s look while keeping it modern?
My recommendation would be keep the skin glowy and fresh. With the right brush blend a bright color like aqua green or purple over the moving eye socket to create a fresh, eighties yet modern beauty look.
Which look do you predict will be next?
For Autumn / Winter 2010, it is evident that the vampy look is the key to beauty trends. The Vampire craze is a result of the movie Twilight and an example of this is smokey eyes, darker nail polish or natural eyes and burgundy red lips.
Congratulations on your new academy, Jay Jay Makeup Academy. What made you decide to create a makeup school?
I\’ve always been passionate about teaching and I\’ve been continuously asked from emerging makeup artists how to create a certain look so I got my Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment and the rest is history.
What industry knowledge will students take away from the course?
Tools and makeup products of the trade, key knowledge on how to blend colors, to application techniques I was taught in Paris, and different makeup looks that are consistently repeated throughout the beauty industry (20\’s ,50\’s 80”s etc.), client consultation, business knowledge, how to makeup the face and features of the face and look three dimensional with only three products.
As an international makeup artist with over 20 years experience, it’s fabulous that you are passing on your knowledge to aspiring makeup artists. Is there any advice you can give to Sassi Sam readers who would like to get started?
My advice is that you don\’t need any experience which is fantastic! Learning the art of makeup is a fresh new skill which is fabulous for prospective wedding and fashion industry clients. The work is enjoyable, you meet interesting personalities and you get to travel the globe. It is possible to learn a lot of valuable makeup information and practical skills in seven weeks at Jay Jay Make Up School Sydney course, however, it\’s important that beauty students have the time to practice and are aware of international runway beauty trends.
