Sarah Kempson, Sarah’s Style Emporium
Sisters-in-law and friends, Karah Tarran-Wilson and Rebecca Reeves-Saunders started Rose and Ruby in 2006 from a mutual love of feminine garments. Quality and classic, timeless designs are at the heart of the company and with Rebecca’s background in communications and PR, and Karah’s in Fine Arts, the label was an instant success.
The Rose and Ruby flagship boutique recently opened in Sydney’s Paddington and already has a strong following in media and celebrity circles on an interstate and international scale. This is something the girls are embracing with plans to expand worldwide in the next five years. I chatted with Karah about her thoughts on upcoming trends, her favourite pieces and what goes on in her life outside of work.
SK: Currently the label is based in Sydney, what do you love about Sydney?
KTW: I adore the Sydney culture, sea side living amongst the city and the casual elegance that Sydney women embrace.
SK: What are the trends for the coming seasons?
KTW: Snake skin is so strong at the moment, it creates a bit of edge to a classic design.
SK: What are your favourite colours to work with?
KTW: Dusty pastels and pops of spring time hues.
SK: What was your first job?
KTW: Babysitting the young children in my street.
SK: Did you have a ‘lucky break’ getting into the fashion industry?
KTW: There was no “lucky break” as such, just hard work and dedication combined with a passion for what we do.
SK: What is your favourite thing about fashion?
KTW: Styling classic pieces to work with the trends and individual personality.
SK: What do you like to do in your spare time?
KTW: Enjoy time with my little girls- Amelija and Ava.
SK: Are you enjoy shopping yourself? Do you shop online?
KTW: Yes – Online is great – such a time saver! However I also love the experience of a day out shopping!
SK: Who are the biggest influences in your life?
KTW: My Family
SK: Who are your heroes or idols?
KTW: Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn… oh there’s too many to list!
SK: Who is your celebrity crush?
KTW: I have a crush on Kate Moss’s sense of style!
SK: Where is your favourite place in the world and why?
KTW: My favourite places are those that have the most memories associated. My husband and I had such a wonderful trip to Bali many years ago and summer evenings on the Sunshine Coast as a family.
SK: Who would you like to be stranded on a desert island with?
KTW: My husband and two daughters
SK: Describe your label in 5 words…
KTW: Classic, romantic, elegant, feminine, relaxed chic
SK: What is your most fun girlie thing you like to do?
KTW: Play dress ups with my daughters
SK: Finally, what is your life motto?
KTW: Work to live, not live to work!
