To Prime or Not to Prime

Prime, prime, prime… We are constantly told to do it. Many are still confused about primers and the benefits of doing so.

Think of it like nail polish: you have a base, colour and top, right? Well primer is your base, foundation is your colour and powder is your top coat.  However, do not replace it with your moisturizer as this sits on the surface of your skin, whereas your moisturizer hydrates from within. It doesn\’t seem so baffling now, does it?

Primers aim to prep your skin before foundation, allowing for a smoother, more flawless application as well as helping your makeup application stay fresher for longer.

Coco Chanel was ahead of her years in both the fashion and beauty industries. It is said Mademoiselle Chanel created the first makeup base decades ago. Chanel Base Lumiere makes a wonderful base for makeup application. It is a light and airy liquid that glides across the skin easily, which means you only need a tad. It keeps the skin feeling smooth and hydrated, and aids the application of makeup in looking fresher for longer. This one because it gives the skin a radiant, luminous glow.

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm is a beauty winner! This multi-purpose wonder serves as a moisturizer, makeup primer and skin treatment and leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth while looking radiant. The pink formula is more like a cream consistency than a thick balm as the name suggests and the scent is light yet a little cosmetic for my liking (I prefer more natural scents). Beauty Flash Balm has been loved by many for generations and I can understand why.

How any of us have survived before Make Up Store Eye Primer is beyond me. Do you find your eye makeup just won\’t stay put? Or it rubs off in patches? You need not worry because Eye Primer can address this. It primes the eyes so that your eyeshadows, liners and eye dusts stay on and prevents oily lids and shine from creeping up to destroy your hard work – I love this so much I stock this in my makeup kit).

Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Primer one of the originals (and best-sellers) on the market, this is one of my favourite primers. Containing aloe vera and chamomile, Auto Pilot Primer treats the skin while prepping. It scent is light and appealing, the consistency is very runny and it blends into the skin with ease. There is so much in a bottle and you only need a pea-sized amount each time so the tube should last a good six months or more.

Do you have a favourite primer?  If so, which one and why?
