AUSTRALIA’S newest Miss Universe Jesinta Campbell beat West Australian entrant Renae Wauhop for the 2010 title held at the Sydney Sofital Wentworth Hotel last night.
Jesinta admitted she thought she had blown her chances after stumbling over her final question from the judges.
The 18-year-old Sydney model, was asked what more could be done to raise awareness of sun damage during an interview with the top five contestants. She struggled with her words when talking about sunscreen but she recovered.
“I honestly thought I’d come in fifth after that happened,” she said. “All the excitement from the past few days caught up with me and I had a mental blank. “This is a huge shock and I’m not going to make that mistake again.”
Next up she head to Las Vegas in August determined to become the next Jennifer Hawkins (Miss Universe 2004).
“I am super determined to bring home the crown,” she said. “This is the biggest honour…I will get to represent my beautiful country overseas so I just feel so blessed.”
Jesinta was presented with a custom-made tiara worth $30,000, by outgoing queen Rachael Finch.
