Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton posed at a photocall last night (September 20th) for Sydney Theatre Company’s main stage launch revealing the 2011 season’s line-up.
Cate shared: “What we had hoped to do this year is to place Australian work in the international context and in dialogue with international works and this year the dialogue was more European.”
The SMH reports that some of the performers in the 2011 season will be Jacqueline McKenzie, Miranda Otto, Colin Friels and Bryan Brown.
The centrepiece of the season, unveiled last night, is an international co-production of Botho Strauss’s Gross und Klein (Big and Small) that will star Cate Blanchett and tour Austria, France, Britain and Germany.
The English playwright Martin Crimp has been commissioned to translate the German writer’s work, which will be directed by distinguished opera and theatre director Luc Bondy.
The mainstage season features 12 productions, including two new Australian works, the Abbey Theatre production of Mark O’Rowe’s hit Terminus, a handful of co-productions and Andrew Upton’s version of Mikhail Bulgakov’s The White Guard, which received five-star reviews when it played at London’s National Theatre this year.
The 2011 Sydney Theatre Company’s new season starts in December.
Ahhhhh Cate is so stylish and haven’t they just breathed fresh air into our arts scene?
