Everyone’s calling it Australia’s Next Top Muddle, and I am only going to touch on it briefly because I don’t want it to be the focus of the night, being there live we had no idea what was going on, we were wondering if it was a publicity stunt even those involved with the show didn’t fully understand what happened.
I was busy taking photos after it was announced that Kelsey Martinovich had beaten favourite Amanda Ware and heard Sarah say:
“Oh my God, I don\’t know what to say right now,” she said. “I\’m feeling a bit sick about this.”
And I stopped taking pics to listen, I was so confused and had absolutely what she meant … all these scenarios were running through my head but when I realised that it was real, I was so shocked and I felt crushed for Sarah but OMG she handled herself so professionally, you could tell she was completely devastated by the mistake.
And it’s ‘funny’ that this occurred, I was having an “Asher Keddie Moment – OffSpring” thinking to myself earlier in the evening, “Can you imagine if they announced the wrong winner?” And OMG it happened … so clearly it’s my fault, I jinxed it!
I realised it was real when Sarah rushed off stage and didn’t participate in all the group hugs going on on the stage at the close of the show.
In a statement, a Foxtel spokesman later said Amanda and Kelsey were “neck and neck” in the voting all night:
“At the time of the result announcement there was a mis-communication between the broadcast truck and the stage,” the spokesman said.
“Sarah handled what was a difficult situation with utmost professionalism and grace.”
As compensation for the error, Foxtel have given Kelsey a $25,000 cash prize and an all-expenses paid trip to New York.
What she said in full shown in the video below:
“Oh my God, I don\’t know what to say right now,” she said. “I\’m feeling a bit sick about this. No. I\’m so sorry about this. Oh my God. I don\’t know what to say. This was a complete accident. It\’s Amanda, I\’m so sorry. It was fed to me wrong. Oh God. This is what happens when you have live TV folks. This is insane, insane, insane, insane &”
The way Kelsey handled the blunder was so professional and Sarah by choosing to continue on and own up to the error live on air says so much about her. There was no spin, just pure integrity, authenticity and ownership for a mistake that wasn’t hers. What an amazing person Sarah is and the girls are so lucky to have her as a role model.
It will be interesting what the audit results will say and if we’ll hear about them (this is a regulation) and this will be a lesson for reality TV shows around the world not to leave vote counting too late, I’m sure we’ll be going back to the Opening of the Envelope option!
It’s such a shame and really sad that this will be the focus of the evening instead of celebrating Amanda Ware’s crown of Australia’s Next Model 2010 winner!
Oh yes, we can’t forget making a special mention of Model Mentor Josh Flinn’s cute dance routine and Jessica Moloney’s win of the audience’s choice of favourite ANTM 2010 winning $5,000.
