Review: SK-II’s New Cellumination Range

| 25 October , 2010 | 18 Replies

I know it’s been ages and some of my readers have been waiting for this review and I apologise but the wait will be worth it.  I have been trialling SK-II’s Cellumination Essence and Deep Surge products and the results are in!

I have been using the two products on my face everyday, twice a day (well nearly every day) since March this year (2010), I’ve been back in-store to the SK-II counter three times to have my skin analysed and my skin has now reached it’s optimum level of natural aura of 70% and it started out at below average of 56%.  As an added note I have also been using the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence everyday, twice a day.

But a quick re-cap on the range:

SK-II promises aura-lucency with its high-precision skincare technology called the Aura Bright Cocktail. This potent complex controls your RGB balance and contains three naturally derived ingredients that work in synergy to give you glowing skin. One of those ingredients is the now famous, pitera, SK-II\’s signature ingredient that delivers unbelievably clear skin. The other two ingredients are De-melano P3C, which has shown unsurpassed skincare efficacy and the other ingredient is Talapewhite, derived from a species of plant in Madagascar which was historically used to treat burns, reduce the appearance of birth marks and skin pigmentation.

Analysis & Results:

The first time I went in-store to get my analysis we didn’t know how the machine worked, we thought it stored the images that were taken of the skin, but it didn’t and so I only have two images from my second and third visit and you can see the difference.

I started out at below average, second time I hit average and the third time I’ve hit above average for my age group (although SK-II is not about age, it’s about find the best holistic solution for your skin). Also, there is an anomaly in the testing, you’re never going to be able to get EXACTLY the same spot when putting the little wand on your skin to take a snapshot.  And Pigmentation never goes away and the right side of my face has pigmentation down the side and no matter how much sunscreen I put on, when I’m in the car during the Spring/Summer months it gets darker.

So this screenshot is the second analysis, see the line where the Brightness is on the grey bar at the bottom? When I first did it, the bar was outside the grey area to the left (56%, below average) and now it’s outside the bar to the right in the third analysis below (71% above average).

The spot analysis in the right hand column, this was taken on an actual pigmentation spot, you can’t see it very well but the pigmentation spot is actually breaking up, there are little dots of white through the brown spot.  The first time the analysis was done it was in the grey area towards the left hand side of it.

Third Analysis, as you can see my overall brightness has gone outside the grey area and is now at above average of 71%, and the pigmentation spot has gone back into the grey area but you can see that the screenshots of the spot are a little bit different but the spot is definitely breaking up.

What does this all mean?  My skin is now plumper and firmer and the quality of my collagen has increased and my skin has a better quality of red, green and blue (RGB) light transmission compared to when I first started where it was a touch dull and lifeless.

As I mentioned above, pigmentation will never go away (it has a ‘memory’ aspect to it) and this shows how much effect sun does have on our skin and especially those of us inflicted by pigmentation – but I’m happy to see that it is breaking up.  The only way we can protect ourselves is with Tripleguard Sunscreen (The Cancer Council sells them) protection of UVA, UVB and UVC, but cosmetics only carry either UVA and UVB separately or together but never with UVC.

So the two SK-II Cellumination (Beauty Essence & Deep Surge Moisturiser) products that I have used have given my skin an increase in overall brightness and plumpness of my skin and I will continue to use the three products (including the Facial Treatment Essence) over the summer months and see how I fair (haha).  At the end of Summer, I’m going to go back to get another analysis and see what affect the summer months have had, I’m quite confident that it will have gotten darker but that my overall ‘brightness’ will remain hovering at the above average mark!

And I’ve enjoyed using the products, they are a nice consistency, the larger sizes last around three/four months, I’ve not used any other brightening product during the six months, I’ve always used the three products consistently no matter what other products I have used, but no other whitening or brightening products.

The three products are:

  • Cellumination Deep Surge Moisturiser 50g RRP$200
  • Cellumination Beauty Essence 30ml & 50ml RRP$200/RRP$300
  • Facial Treatment Essence: 75ml bottle RRP$100 or RRP$185 for 150ml

The new SK-II Cellumination Range is available at SK-II counters at David Jones and Myer and you can also visit SK-II’s website for more information:

I would love to hear your thoughts and if you have any questions, I understand the testing and analysis process but it may not be clear to you, so please feel free to ask questions in the comments area.

Hi Sksugiarto – I guess it depends on how dark your spot is, mine were only light and you can see the difference in my photos. May be you need to go to a dermatologist to help you lighten them if they are really dark.

I don’t know why the advertisement so good?? I used almost 3 bottles of Whitening Spot SK II and celumination essence 2 bottles but my dark spot still not change. So I won’t recomend others to use it. waste money

No that is ok – I will go back to the lady I spoke with and discuss it with her.

Some of the products I can’t use due to my dry skin – for instance the FACIAL TREATMENT CLEAR LOTION is not good for my skin as it dries it out far too much.

‘I don’t know if the lady was just meaning for me to use as few products as possible on my skin – which is normally the case with stopping it from getting too dry.

    Hi Mhor,
Thanks for your questions, I guess it really comes down to your budget. I was recommended to get the best benefits from the products was to use all three.
Re; dry skin and them being too much for your skin, I am not a beauty expert but I can’t see how they would be too much for your skin. The facial treatment essence and the Cellumination Beauty Essence are not heavy at all and if you have dry skin you want to try and hydrate the skin as much as you can. Both Essences soak into the skin straight away.
If you would like me to ask my SK-II expert, let me know and I’m more than happy to get his opinion.

Hi I was wondering why you used both the Cellumination Beauty Essence and the Facial Treatment Essence as I was given the impression when I spoke with the SK-II lady that the Beauty Essence would be the replacement of the Facial Treament Essence in the Cellumination range.

Can you tell me what information you were given about the two products and using them separately or combining them both.

Also I have dry skin and it could be that the lady was saying that it would be too much to use both products on my skin rather than just the one.

Thank you so much Sam…i think i’m going to try some samples..since in my county we don’t have a skII counter, i cant purches them here
    You are so nice…thank you…

    HI Natasha,
I received a reply from SK II and as I thought they recommend that you go in and speak to an SK-II consultant, that way she can get more personalised advice and get the right products prescribed for you. In regards to the most potent product in the Cellumination range, it would be the Cellumination Essence as this product penetrates to the lower levels of the skin where it will be more effective. Obviously best results will occur using all three products.
    Hope this has been helpful.

    Hi Natasa,

Thanks so much for your lovely comments. I’ve gone back to the brand and asked them a few questions and will update this post for you when I have an answer. There are a number of brightening products on the market now including Jurlique but I haven’t used them, just SK II. I trialled SK II because I was able to have it scientifically measure it through their machine whereas all other products are only going to be your own personal observations unless you take before and after photographs.

This is a list of some of the other skin brightening products on the market:

Will update this when I hear back from SK II.

    Hope this is helpful.

Hi, i was considering buying this skin care line, but it is kind of expensive, what other skin care line that is just as effective would you reccomend or do you think this would work if i bought only one of the three items and if so which one?Thanks..lovely blog and exhaustive review.i’m putting you on my blogroll:)

    Hey Jo,
After I have cleansed my face, I put the Facial Treatment Essence on my face first, then the Beauty Essence (in the bell shaped bottle) and then the Deep Surge Moisturiser. In Winter I needed an additional moisturiser or oil on my face at night but during summer the moisturiser (using all three SK-II products) is enough but I also put an SPF product over the top during the day.
Hope that helps and feel free to ask anymore questions 🙂

    Hi Sassi,
Thank you very much for blogging about your experiences with using the new SK II –
Cellumination range. I was just wondering, the order you applied the three products?

Also, I wonder if it would be just as effective if I just used the Cellumination Deep Surge Moisturiser as the day/night cream instead of using an additional day/night cream?
Thanks and keep up the good work on your blog 🙂

    Hi Candii,

Thanks so much for your comment and questions. I don’t just use these products on their own, but they are the base of my skincare regime everyday. I do use moisturisers (day and night creams) as well as sunscreen, I would never leave the house without putting sunscreen on. As far as I know SK-II is good for any age and if you go to our local counter and discuss your skin with the counter person they will recommend the best options for you. I don’t use the complete range for my skin, I think there are some other brands that are just as effective and not as expensive but the Cellumination range really worked for me and I will continue to use it.

I hope that’s helpful, feel free to ask any further questions.

thx for the review. I’m new to sk ii and just thinking abt trying it. I’m definately gona try the facial treatment essense. For the cellumination products, do u think it’s ok for the age range 20-25 to start using it? Do u also use any uv protection and any other moisturizer? Or just this three products are enough for sun protection??
