I was lucky enough to head down to Westfield’s $1.2 billion newly revamped Pitt Street Mall Stage One opening this morning, it was especially awesome for me because I used to work at Westfield in the CBD marketing team looking after the four properties a number of years ago, I know all their ‘dirty’ secrets!! Hehe, no they don’t have any … it was one of my favourite jobs and it was where I learnt the importance of branding and I used the foundations of what I learnt there when I started my humble little brand.
But ANYWAY, back to the opening, the new mall looks absolutely incredible and I sincerely hope it revives our City Shopping Precinct, it’s been so derelict for such a long time, we are an international destination and our CBD shopping should reflect that!
The First Stage was opened six months early and Steven Lowy very proudly opened it with Aussie fashion designers supporting him: Sarah Jane Clarke & Heidi Middleton (Sass & Bide), Leona Edmiston, Dan Single (Ksubi), Simone and Nicole Zimmermann (Zimmermann), Gail Elliott (Little Joe Woman), Alexandra and Genevieve Smart (Ginger and Smart), Nic Cerrone, Marie Ritchie (Hussy) and Leading Aussie Chefs, Justin North (Becasse), Michael Moore (The Summit) AND John Sussman (Cloudy Bay Fish Company) hosted by my glamboyant mate Melissa Hoyer!
Steven pronounced: “Today marks the reopening of Pitt St Mall, and Westfield Sydney will set a new standard for shopping centres in Australia. We\’re very excited to open the first stage of the project, some six months early, and look forward to seeing this centre become an essential shopping and dining destination for the people of Sydney, and the 26.8 million domestic and international visitors who come to Sydney each year. When complete, we believe the centre will become one of the iconic downtown retail destinations in the world, with a completed value – including the office precinct – of more than $3 billion.”
Today the precinct opened with with 130 fashion and food specialty stores open for trade and a further 120 stores will open between November 2010 and late-2011. The opening of a 25-storey commercial tower at 85 Castlereagh Street will mark the completion of the total project, anticipated to be in early 2012.
I was lucky to chat with the gals from Ginger & Smart (who’s store doesn’t open until April 2010 with their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection), the divine Gail Elliott from Little Joe, and Marie Ritchie from Hussy. Glamazon model Samantha Harris was there wearing an outfit from Diane Von Furstenberg. And I can’t forget, I got to meet the Queen of the Glossies, Jackie Frank from Marie Claire.
And it was so cool to see the Gap Store and of course the big signage declaring Zara Coming Soon!!! All in all it was a fun morning and I can’t wait to head back in and explore some more!
Tell me if you’ve popped in and had a look yet and what you think. Big Congrats to Westfield!
