Today (January 26th) is Australia Day, it’s a holiday and we commemorate the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 which is seen as controversial by some Aussies, particularly our fellow Indigenous Aussies but the date has stuck and we commemorate all that we are proud of for being an Aussie no matter where we have originated from.
Our Young Australian of the Year was Jessica Watson who sailed around the world un-assisted and solo and she’s was only 16 when she did it! Social Entrepreneur Simon McKeon was named Australian of the Year for his lifelong efforts to support Australian and international charities has earned him great admiration and respect in the community, and Senior Australian of the Year 2011 is equal rights campaigner Professor Ron McCallum AO. And Australia\’s Local Hero 2011 is suicide prevention advocate and compassionate Australian Donald Ritchie OAM.
It’s also Ellen DeGeneres’ birthday, can you believe she has her birthday on Australia Day and she has an Aussie wife and has never been? Anyway, I’m wishing Ellen tonnes of glamboyant birthday wishes and I am determined to finish my Ellen In Oz project this quarter, I’ve let it drag out far too long but it’s my commitment to me and you that I will finish it … some of the imagery we have created looks awesome and I can’t wait to share them with you. It’s disappointing I didn’t get my act together before Oprah arrived, so it will look like I’m ‘copying’ her but you know I’ve been working on it for a long time!
