I am Number Four is an electrifying inter-worldly adventure built around the tale of a teen refugee from another planet with a portentous destiny. Of course, his daily existence is under serious threat, pairing the trials of adolescence with that of intergalactic hope. A big ask for any teenager one might think.
John (Pettyfer) is ‘number four\’ of nine escapees, destined to protect the planet Earth from the Mogadorians—an evil alien race who destroyed John\’s home planet. But to do so, he needs to stay alive long enough to develop his special powers, and with number three having just met his demise, the Mogadorians seem closer than ever.
Intergalactic battles aside, John is also a teenager, and like many his age, he also has to battle to fit in, to manage the school bullies (without resorting to his superpowers) — and of course there is the battle to win the affections of Sarah (Agron), who has quickly caught his eye. It’s a non-stop fun-ride as he faces one hurdle after the other as he attempts to fit in and stay alive!
With five others still out there, the film also alludes to being the start of what will no doubt grow into a popular teenage series. Australian actress Teresa Palmer sizzles as the no-holds-barred ‘number six\’, and it\’s easy to get excited about what\’s in-store for her character in the films to come. The other Australian to really make his mark in this film is young actor Callan McAuliffe, whose performance as the sweet-yet-insecure Sam, just may win a few young female admirers. I\’m sure this is the first of a bright career for this young actor.
With all the key ingredients for a fun teenage adventure, I Am Number Four is the perfect answer to a vampire-free action-adventure.
I Am Number 4 is in cinemas now.
