I was totally honoured to be invited to help celebrate NIVEA’s 100 year anniversary (Rihanna is the face of the campaign) “City Retreat” event a couple of weeks ago, I was a bit worried about spending a day and night with a bunch of beauty editors but I didn’t need to, it was a perfectly planned day of fun activities that ended with an ‘evening of glamour‘ and ‘a night of five star luxury.’
The event was veiled in secrecy and unfortunately us beauty girls are not big with secrets so it was detectives at our best trying to find out what was in-store for us. The day began with a morning pick up and drop off at a divine home in Vaucluse (currently for sale for pocket change of $20M), our overnight bags were collected and we were ushered inside to enjoy the view of our own little private harbour waterfront home for the day and snack on a yummy canape breakfast.
After a welcome we were split into three groups and each headed off to different sessions. For my group we headed into the ‘education’ lab to chat with Dr Annika Schrader who talked about her lab in Hamburg and how it works, with lots of information about the analysing of skin including bits we really would prefer not to know. There are more than 570 researchers at the Beiersdorf laboratories with the labs registering 77 new patents in 2010 alone. Dr Schrader’s lab is focused on dry and aged skin and they focus on identifying skin problems and finding solutions for them before passing onto the product development team.
Next up, our little group trotted down to the garden where we learnt about the new products and new direction for the brand this year and receiving a lovely facial as we rested on deck chairs listening to the waves crash on the beach (also two boys were swimming and thought they were in heaven when they saw our group in the garden). Not all the beauty editors had a facial, they didn’t want to remove their make up, but this Sassi one was brave enough and my skin was just so hydrated afterwards. Treated to an iced-tea to finish off we headed upstairs to meditate with Carolyne Gowen from Still Your Mind … it was a lovely way to end our sessions.
Lee Salisbury, Brand Manager at NIVEA, gave us an overview of their newest product the Express Hydration body lotion but I’ll provide more info about that later.
After a really yummy lunch, we were picked up by jet boats and taken on a ride around the harbour before being dropped off at the accommodation for the night, the Sebel Pier One at The Rocks. Lucky the team had organised for us to have our hair styled by the Schwarzkopf team because racing around on the harbour is all about ‘bad hair days’ and not ideal for glamming it up in a short space of time for our evening event.
We were also incredibly lucky to have an in-room full body massage and man oh man, it was just heaven. Then we were whisked away by another boat to Fort Denison for dinner under the stars created by chef Sean Moran and the team from Sean’s Panaroma. The biggest surprise of the night was stepping off the boat to be greeted by our friends and family who joined us in celebrating 100 years with Nivea.
After a speech by Clynton Bartholomeusz, MD at Beiersdorf Australia and tunes by Hybrid, we enjoyed a divine dinner and ended the night with a big blue Happy 100th Birthday Cake for NIVEA and enjoyed our very own fireworks display. Then it was time to go back to our luxurious accommodation and be treated to breakfast in bed the next morning and then head into our offices for the day.
But it didn’t stop there, we were surprised by a yummy delivery … a mini-version of the Nivea birthday cake and mine is gone didn’t touch the sides, it was so delicious and made by Planet Cake.
I really can’t thank NIVEA and Maxted Thomas PR enough for including me in these celebrations, it was such an honour and their generosity was incredible.
And congratulations to NIVEA for reaching 100 years as a skincare brand, that’s just brilliant.
Enjoy the photos from the event!
