Exhibited in a modern art gallery of Sydney’s inner-west, the afternoon showcase of Ellery’s Spring Summer collection got everyone talking. The pre-show anticipation wasn’t just for the collection, but also for the presence of Australia’s A-list celebrities in the front row. We’re talking Lara Bingle, Ruby Rose, Teresa Palmer, Jessica Marais, Krew Boylan and many more. But the cameras went frantic when Jennifer Hawkins walked the catwalk for Perth-based designer, Kym Ellery.
The monotone paintings in the large white space appended to the poetic ambience. Entitled, The Second Marriage, the inspiration of the collection comes from David Hockney’s contemporary artwork featuring prints, plastic, leather and gold detailing. Every model pair stepped out in heavily geometricised designs, reflecting on ’90s fashion photography.
Sharp lapels on boxy jackets, flared cropped trousers, heavily-feathers skirts, crisp-cotton shirt dresses and corsets were the highlight of the show. Ellery introduced an androgynous silhouette – which is the one of the first we’ve seen all week in RAFW. The subtle, under-toned colours of peach, gold, grey, nude and champagne complimented the textured garments.
Jennifer Hawkins walked down (just as another model, surprisingly didn’t open or close the show) in a citrus-green fishtail gown with leather panels, intricate embroidery in chartreuse and diamante brooches at the front. Front-rower, Lara Bingle, was also in an Ellery creation – sharp cigarette pants teamed with black opaque-trimmed man shirt.
She also left the audience surprised with her debut menswear. One in a nude knee-length skirt (Scottish surprise) and another in long sheer sleeves paired with loose pants. The headscarves, tied under the chin, were a subtle reference to Little Red Riding Hood, but the heavy-duty clogs clashed with every feminine element in the collection.
The warrior look was achieved by tying a loose knot at the back with a messy outdo framing the face. Illuminated skin, toned-down lips and accentuated eyebrows in gold and orange hues, was the beauty look for Ellery.
Definitely the highlight of my week at RAFW, so far.
