Exclusive Interview: Rachael Finch for Witchery White Shirt Campaign 2011

As reported here at the end of March, the 2011 Witchery White Shirt Campaign raising awareness and funds around the seriousness of Ovarian Cancer for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) has started.

Featuring a variety of Aussie celebs lending their name and face to the campaign, I’ve been lucky enough to get an exclusive interview with brand ambassador Rachael Finch.

Sassi: What made you want to get involved in the White Shirt Campaign?

Rachael: When I read that one woman dies every 10 hours from ovarian cancer it shocked me! I have been learning a lot about the disease and how important early detection is, so as a woman I feel it’s extremely important to make other women, and men, aware of the disease. It’s a privilege to be able to help raise awareness on such an important issue with an amazing retail brand.

Sassi:What message do you want everyone to take away from this campaign?

Rachael: People can go into a Witchery store on May 19th, purchase a white shirt and 100% of the gross proceeds from the sale of the shirts will go directly to OCRF. Everyone can also encourage their friends and family to do the same and hopefully we’ll all be wearing white on May 19th!

Sassi: The campaign launches during Rosemount Australian Fashion week, are you going to be front row or on the catwalk for any shows?

Rachael: Fashion Week gets more exciting each year I’m looking forward to seeing Kirrily Johnston, Bianca Spender and Camilla & Marc. I think Australian designers are making a big statement on the international market & I love being able to cheer fellow Aussies on!

Sassi:You\’re also the face of Speedo Swimwear, what\’s the best thing about being the face of an ‘iconic\’ Aussie brand?

Rachael: Speedo are such a motivated, positive and vibrant company to work for. I love being the face of a company who continue to produce long lasting swimwear and make health & happiness play a key role in their brand. I’m excited about the 2011 beach range coming out soon – there are some amazing high fashion pieces that I can’t wait to wear.

Sassi: What do you love about Australian Fashion and working with Australian brands?

Rachael: I think Aussies in general have a positive and relaxed attitude when it comes to work so the finished product is always a result of enjoyment. Each designer draws their inspiration from a different place and that’s what makes every collection unique. We shot Speedo’s new 2011 beach range on an Australian beach and they couldn’t have picked a more perfect location.

Sassi: How have you managed to stay so grounded after being thrown into the media spotlight?

Rachael: I think it’s important to have good people around you who are honest, caring and supportive. I travel home to Townsville as much as I can to see family and friends and if I get a long break we spend a few days camping and waterskiing. I’m trying to plan a trip as we speak!

Sassi: What do you love about being Rachael Finch?

Rachael: I wouldn’t survive without sand, sport or sun. I love staying active by playing touch football, waterskiing or running along the beach and I cook whenever I can. One of my favourite nights in is to host a dinner party with family and friends.

Sassi: What are your top five tips on staying fit and healthy?

Rachael: When it comes to food think clean and lean and when it comes to exercise, find something that you can enjoy with friends that makes you happy. (Don’t call it exercise!)

Sassi: What are your five things you can\’t leave the house without?

Rachael: Diary, bottle of water, earphones, lip balm and phone.

Sassi: Favourite book that changed you?

Rachael: My brother gave me a ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ book for my birthday once because I love reading inspiring and motivating real-life stories. It still lives on my bedside table.

Sassi: Do you have a favourite recipe you learnt on Masterchef that you continue to cook? What is it and why?

Rachael: I still cook my ‘Signature Dish’ all the time! On the show it was the first dish I cooked for the judges – a crispy skin salmon fillet with a fresh mango salad and a vanilla beurre blanc. For dessert I made crepes with creme patissiere (like custard) and a strawberry & basil salad. If I’m in a hurry I will make the salmon with an easier sauce, but I love combining these flavours on the one plate. It’s making me hungry!!

The White Shirt collection is a specially crafted capsule collection available in Witchery stores across Australia and New Zealand and online at witchery.com.au. Made up of three shirts for men and seven shirts and a classic tote bag for women with 100% of the gross proceeds from the sale of the capsule collection going directly to the OCRF.

The White Shirts are available in-stores now and on May 19th, Australians and New Zealanders will unite to show their commitment to fighting ovarian cancer with celebrity ambassadors in-store on the day helping to sell shirts.  The stores involved include: Sydney Mid-City Centre, Melbourne Chadstone and Auckland Nutflied Street.
