Canberra\’s Commonwealth Park has been transformed into a sea of colour and was officially opened by Floriade 2011 Ambassador Rachael Finch on the weekend wearing a dress designed by Susie Dunn.
The Festival of Flowers runs from September 17th to Sunday October 16th and you can expect to see over one million flowers in bloom.
Each year the Floriade team selects a new and exciting theme, which guides both the garden bed plantings and the festival\’s entertainment and activities. The 2011 Floriade theme is a feast for the senses and the garden beds have been filled with colourful tulips, irises, daffodils and annuals in designs inspired by the flavours that stimulate the senses.
Persuading more than one million bulbs and annuals to bloom on cue is a big task, and one that takes careful timing and maintenance. The equivalent of 3000 box trailers of planting compost is moved in and spread over four hectares, with 10 full-time gardeners working over seven weeks to plant the bulbs. And when Floriade ends the remaining flowers are cut and distributed to local nursing homes and hospitals.
Floriade Nightfest runs from September 28th to October 2nd and will include movies under the stars, cocktails, live entertainment, night markets, food wine and a spectacular new lighting installation called “Storm of the Senses.”
And running alongside the Nightfest Garnier World, a living, breathing beauty paradise where Garnier will pamper you with complimentary treatments including mini massages, facials or hair styling.
Floriade Opening Hours are:
- 9.00 am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday
- 9.00 am – 5.30pm weekends and public holidays
- Last entry to the event is 30 minutes before closing.
