Hosted by Myer Ambassador Lauren Phillips, models presented the dresses while Jessica got up close and personal signing CDs and taking photos with fans. Jessica is currently enjoying the success of back to back hits from her hit album ‘Get ‘Em Girls’ but she’s joined forces with Australian fashion label KuKu to create a range of beautiful party frocks.
During her hectic launch at Melbourne Myer I managed to grab five minutes of her time to sit down and chat about the range:
Bronny: You’re so busy Jessica, thanks so much for giving us five minutes. Firstly, it’s a beautiful range, can you tell me us little about it and how it’s all going for you?
Jessica: Yes, it has been a really busy time for me. I normally just try to do projects that I want to do and keep it simple and try to have fun with it. Designing these five capsule dresses has been a massive blast but also quite stressful in some ways, but it has really helped to bring my mind from other projects. Collaborating with KuKu was something that I always wanted to do – so I was really happy to get that chance.
Bronny: How did you find that transition from music to fashion?
Jessica: The transition wasn’t that hard because I found while I was designing the dresses it was like making music. With the theme of the dresses, I got a sense of color and with Summer coming up I wanted something bright and energised, cute and womanly at the same time.
Bronny: Did you take inspiration from your time in America – what an amazing experience?
Jessica: Yes, yes it was! It was about remembering all the moments that I had while recording the album and I actually named all the dresses after some of the songs. The dress I’m wearing is Gettum Girls (Jessica wears the white lace mini dress). It’s very covered up still but fun and elegant.
Bronny: And, what are the other dresses in the collection?
Jessica: There’s ‘Inescapable‘ that’s the multi colored dress, ‘Galaxy‘, the dress named after the song myself and Stan have recorded and been singing the past few weeks. Then there’s ‘Handle It‘ which is the feather dress and ‘Saturday Night‘ which is fun and girlie. I just wanted something fun in the dresses and focused on the colours, textures and patterns to create that.
Bronny: You mentioned Summer, what do you love about Summer in Australia?
Jessica: Well you know Summer in Australia is a hot time, and you don’t want to be too covered up. You just want something white and loose, that doesn’t strangle you. In designing the collection I also wanted dresses that would fit my body and shape. We actually used my body as the main influence which was absolutely fun, I had people altering the dresses on me and then coming back and making changes. It’s been a learning curve and it’s something that I’d like to continue on and keep doing in the future.
Bronny: And one last question! What are you doing for Christmas?
Jessica: Wow – three weeks away, it’s so exciting. I haven’t been home for a while so there’s family I haven’t seen in so long that I want to spend time with over Christmas and New Years. I can’t wait.
And with that last comment I had to let Jessica get back to her busy life and prepare for the launch range in Sydney the following day. KuKu is a Sydney fashion label that focuses on creating dresses that makes the wearers feel fabulous. Jessica’s range is available in all Myer stores around Australia. For more information on the range regarding price and availability head to the Myer website. Jessica’s album ‘Get ‘Em Girls’ is available on iTunes and in all good music stores.
