The Rum Diary is based on the novel of the same name written by Hunter S Thompson and follows the misadventures of Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) as the unfortunate, intoxicated, and misguided American journalist working for the The Daily News in Puerto Rico. Set in the 1950\’s, Kemp is thrown into the underworld of the newspaper industry and discovers there is a lot more to life than the astrological fortunes he writes. He is intent on breaking a big story but authorities are hell bent against it. Thompson has based this story on some of his personal experiences as a journalist in Puerto Rico back in the day which is very clear throughout the film.
It has some interesting concepts but rather than biting the bullet and going full on into a story, it is the piece of a story with not much backing. No doubt Depp and Ribisi bring some interesting acting talent, however, they are pretty much drunk or hung over throughout the entire film.
But this is where it gets interesting as the writer notes:Â “It’s got a romantic notion…that and money…and I was faced with the fact of having to dig out my 40-year old story…I can’t change it, like, ‘ye gods, this is me, this is the world I lived in’…so I approached it as a writer…it’s a good story.”
What is fun about this film is the hilarity of the characters as they keep stumbling about getting into more and more trouble. The gorgeous Aaron Eckhart plays a ruthless businessman Sanderson who has a web that spans the entirety of Puerto Rico and beyond. It explores the concept of greed and how westerners take over smaller islands to build their beautiful hotels that spoil such a gorgeous coastline. There is a cracking scene where the boys discover a new drug in the form of eye drops – stay tuned for that one!
Johnny Depp plays a convincing alcoholic and has some very funny moments. Get your Rum and find out about the diary of Kemp\’s life in cinemas now.
