Directed by: Scott Hicks
Starring: Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner
Sassi\’s Star Rating: 3/5

In The Lucky One, based on Nicholas Spark\’s bestseller, a marine returns from Iraq, determined to find the woman whose photograph saved his life.

Directed by Scott Hicks, the powerful warzone shots quickly fade to the return home of U.S. Marine Sergeant Logan, played by a well-muscled Zac Efron. Instead of the joyful reunion of a returned solider, we see Logan arrive by bus at his sister\’s, where the only soul that seems happy to see him is his dog.

Logan has trouble settling in, as posttraumatic stress plagues him. Desperate for a change of scenery, he decides to seek out the woman in the photograph he found on the battlefield.

His journey takes him to a quaint town in North Carolina, where he finds the beautiful Beth, played by Taylor Schilling. Never comfortable with people or good with words, Logan struggles to tell Beth about the picture, and instead takes the offer of working at her dog kennel in order to get close to her.

Beth is reluctant at first, but through Logan\’s bonding with her adorable son Ben (Riley Thomas Stewart), and her sweet yet meddling grandmother (Blythe Danner), Logan and Beth inevitably form a relationship. It\’s not all paradise (though there are enough steamy sex scenes to make you wonder), as Beth\’s controlling ex-husband soon makes life difficult for all of them.

Centered around Beth and Logan\’s love story, the plot moves at a good pace, though it is fairly predictable. Still, the character of Logan is so different from Efron\’s usual roles, that Zac does an admiral job flexing his acting (and real) muscles in the film.

If you\’re up for a few tears and laughs, a story of love, cute overload in the form of little boy Ben, and plenty of close-ups of Efron\’s steel-blue eyes, then grab your friends and head to the theatre!

Join Efron in his search for love … the Lucky One is in cinemas now.
