I recently got to taste test the newest yoghurt to hit our supermarket shelves, hailing from the rolling hills of Central New York, the Chobani Greek Yoghurt is very thick and creamy as created by Chobani’s Master Yoghurt Maker, Mustafa Dogan.
I eat yoghurt daily, but I’ll say up-front that I eat organic full fat yoghurt because I’m not an advocate of low-fat foods as they are much higher in sugar which I consider as ‘poison’ but I won’t go into that right now. Chobani Greek Yoghurt is certified Kosher and Gluten Free, has five live and active cultures and three probiotics, and is made with natural ingredients and is very yummy.
The makers boast of it’s creamy thickness and I can attest to that although I did find it a bit too thick because of what I add to my fruit salad (Chia Seeds, LSA, Mix of Seeds & Nuts), so I needed to add a bit more than usual but on it’s own it’s perfect. I only ate the natural / plain variations as the fruit version are too high in sugar for me (the average amount of sugar is 10.4gms per 100gms compared to say Ski Divine in Berry, which is 13gms per 100gms) … I do not buy any processed food that has sugar levels higher than 5g per 100gm and my recollection for the plain version was around 5gms which is my limit.
Chobani Yoghurt was started by Hamdi Ulukaya, CEO and Founder of Chobani, got his start in the dairy business from his homeland in Turkey. He left Turkey to study at State University of New York in Albany and it was then he noticed how poor the yoghurt was in the US compared to his homeland. It wasn’t until 2005, when he stumbled upon a for sale advert for a yoghurt plant that had been recently closed down by Kraft Foods that he bit the bullet, bringing out family friend and Master Yoghurt Maker Mustafa to help craft the recipe for Chobani. 12 months later, Chobani hit the shelves but it wasn’t until 2009 that Chobani started to hit the mass market and now it’s available in Australia.
Chobani is available throughout Victoria and New South Wales at Woolworths stores in a variety of creamy flavours, including Fat Free Blueberry, Peach, Strawberry and Plain as well as 98% Fat Free Mango, Passion Fruit, Pineapple and Plain.
