Ridley Scott has big shoes to fill with his return to the sci-fi genre with Prometheus. Ironically, it’s his own shoes he is filling after his huge successes with Alien and Blade Runner. This film tackles some big questions about what is out there in our Universe. It is the year 2093 and the ship Prometheus transports a team of explorers seeking to find the beginnings of humankind. It is their belief that our origins come from a higher being and, as curious as we humans are, we are on a mission to find out exactly where we come from. Be careful what you wish for humans!
Charlize Theron stars as the ship’s captain Meredith Vickers which is an unusual choice but she definitely suits the serious roles just as much as the romantic leads. She brings some mystery to the ship and plays the character really well. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) is amazed by the discovery and determined to find the source of mankind for all the right reasons. Of course, not everyone on board feels the same way and that is where it gets interesting. Guy Pearce was oddly cast as Peter Weyland, the sponsor of the voyage, you’ll have to see what I mean about his character, if you can recognise him!
Upon landing, the team gets suited up to find out what’s really going on. David 8 played by Michael Fassbender is my favourite character really pushing the boundaries and giving us more artificial intelligence insight. Apparently, this android is 99% emotional. That’s more than some humans I know! What’s really exciting is looking at the gadgetry of the future. Long gone are the days when we look at these movie special effects as if they are unachievable. Now we look at them and think, “Yeah, maybe in another 50 years we’ll have that!” which is so exciting!
Again, Scott takes on a wild ride and the 3D experience really gets you involved! The graphics and effects are truly magnificent and will not disappoint. Interestingly, the buzz is that Prometheus was set to be the prequel to Alien, which Scott doesn’t deny. In fact, he admits there is a link but it’s not as close as being the prequel, there could be some more films in between. This is what I found frustrating, because it has set it up for the next film and we have to wait. However, sci-fi fans will love it, there’s hyper sleep chambers, a cool spaceship, new technology, awesome suits and some rockin’ discoveries with a few interesting extra terrestrials thrown in. What more could you ask for?
