Directed by: Tony Gilroy
Starring: Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton
Sassi’s Star Rating: 4/5
How could they make a Bourne series movie without our hero Matt Damon and his rocking character Bourne? Well, as the tagline will tell you, ‘There was never just one’! You are safe hands with Tony Gilroy, the director, as he was heavily involved in writing/directing the Bourne classics! I think that is what saves this movie – he really captures the energy and manages to keep it going throughout.
So the adventure begins again with Aaron Cross (Renner) on a discovery path to find out more about where he came from and how he came to be. The Bourne Legacy does take a different direction which was really needed to spice it up again and I was not displeased. A big Bourne fan, I did have my reservations and after an admittedly slow start, it soon pumped up to the action packed thriller that I love and I could relax again.
Introducing another female lead with Dr. Marta Shearing (Weisz) was nicely played and her role was a refreshing addition to the series. Behind the scenes, the ever weird Ed Norton palays retired col. Eric Byer on the hunt for Cross. There was a lot more of the story in this extraction from the classics telling us more about Jason Bourne and the ‘others’ as the tagline suggests.
For fans, this will provide some much needed information about how it all ties together and it is very cleverly done. What I like most about it is that it has kept that edge and I felt truly satisfied. My test for this? If I feel like running down the stairs in the lobby or karate chopping my way through the toilet cubicle – then we have a winner. So the answer is yes, did feel those things and everyone looked pumped after coming out. A bit of humour was thrown in there as well which was surprising but all in all, very well put together and tensions built just beautifully.
Watch for an awesome motorcycle scene that even scared Renner himself, but well worth it as it is fantastic! Definitely not the Bourne Redundancy that was expected – Bourne fans will LOVE IT!
There was never just one (movie) – make sure you don’t miss this one – in cinemas now.
