Jennifer Hawkins was her glamboyant usual self as she led a contingency of models down the runway for Myer’s African inspired Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show last week, it was a colourful show with a bounty of beautiful designs that we can get excited about as the weather warms up and we can smell Spring in the air which means we can stock up our wardrobes.
We were lucky to chat one-on-one with Jen to get all the goss from her on what her favourite upcoming Spring/Summer trends are, as well as all things Cozi Swimwear and her new JLH by Jennifer Hawkins shoe collection.
Sassi: What are the key Spring/Summer 2012 trends that we can look forward to and must put in our wardrobes?
Jen: This season is all about colour and prints, there’s plenty of neon or vibrant colours to choose from as well as clashing prints and floral prints. Mixing them up and layering the colours together is a must do for the wardrobe. There’s also the wardrobe staples of black & white which I love, and personally am loving a bit of denim in the wardrobe. It’s easy to mix and match the seasonal trends back with denim and black & white without being over the top.
Sassi: We love the incredible new Myer campaign! What was it like working with the animals? What was the most amazing thing about the shoot? Did anything funny or scary happen?
Jen: South Africa was just amazing, it was just so incredible and the results of the campaign I’m just so happy with. Mixing the wildlife with fashion, Jess and I just loved the experience. I really love animals so getting to work with them was just so fantastic. They are so powerful and grounding at the same time. Some highlights were being able to pick up cubs and being able to cuddle them, and riding an elephant. We were shooting a scene with a Cheetah and it tried to run away, I just had to let go of the lead otherwise I would have being dragged along, it was scary but amazing at the same time. Filming with the animals took a long time, especially the cubs always running off. And being up at 5am to see the sunrise each morning was just beautiful and so rewarding.
Sassi: Do you have some favourite pieces/designs/trends that you cannot wait to wear this season?
Jen: Yes there are so many trends and pieces I’m looking forward to wearing, in particular I’m loving Manning Cartell, some pretty floral fabrics, summer knits with demin. There’s also Aurelio Costarella’s divine tailoring and embroidery this season. Am loving Morrison’s muted palette and digital prints and I’ll be adding some structured metallic jackets to my collection. And Nicola Finnetti’s pastel collection is really pretty and of course a bit of black and white to round it out. And I’m loving peplums this season as well, there’s so much to love this season.
Sassi: Tell us about your new Cozi collection, what’s the inspiration behind the new collection? Favourite pieces? Key trends?
Jen: This season I was inspired once again by my travels, this time by tribal, ethnic and aztec prints. I’ve also bought back a new version of the leopard print, it was popular last season, and have introduced them in navy and aqua colours. Florals, we always have florals and this season we’ve focused more on fit so that more women can wear them and feel good in them.
Sassi: Tell us about your new JLH by Jennifer Hawkins shoe collection?
Jen: We have just relaunched the brand as a stand-alone brand, JLH by Jennifer Hawkins, extending the range away from the collaboration under which it was initially launched with Siren Shoes. The SS’12 collection features our biggest collection to date with 23 pieces. I looked to what was missing in my personal collection of shoes to help create this collection. The 10 designs come in a colour palette of warm hues and neutral tones including burnt orange, tan camel and lipstick red, as well as the classic black. We’ve also focused on the construction of the shoes this season, making sure they are as comfortable to wear as well as being on trend with the designs.
Sassi: You’ve just come back from a relaxing break in the Maldives, what were your five must-have items you took away with you?
Jen: Yes we had a fantastic time in the Maldives, it was a photoshoot with Grazia as well so there was some work alongside the playtime. Five things that had to come with me included; swimsuits from my new Cozi Collection, of course, sunscreen, wedges from JLH, a wide brimmed hat, maxi dress and denim shorts.
Sassi: What mantra do you live by daily?
Jen: I don’t have a mantra per se that I live by, I just make a conscious effort to be positive everyday and grateful for all that comes my way.
Sassi: What goals have you set for yourself over the next couple of years?
Jen: I definitely want to do some more traveling with Jake, we have been bitten by the traveling bug I also want to continue to grow my two brands JLH and Cozi and keep growing as a person, being the best I can be.
Sassi: What are some of your favourite downtime activities?
Jen: Jake and I love the movies and watching DVD’s. We’ve just built an in-house movie theatre in our new home so we’re really excited about that. We also love to spend time with friends especially during summertime, bbq’s and pool time.
Jen’s JLH Shoes and Cozi Swimwear collections are available nationally at Myer.
