Glenview is a quiet suburban paradise in the middle of Ohio. It’s the kind of place where picket fences are white, the neighbours are friendly, and an average guy can join Costco as an assistant manager and twelve years later become manager of that very same store (Ben Stiller as Evan). When the stores security guard is murdered in mysterious circumstances, Evan vows to avenge his death and forms a neighbourhood watch. Unfortunately, the standard of applicants isn’t exactly what Evan had hoped for.
He’s joined by three recruits Franklin (Jonah Hill) the mentally unstable police force reject, Jamarcus (Richard Ayoade) the socially inept token black guy, and Bob (Vince Vaughn) who is just looking for a little guy time. They would rather drink beer and shoot pool than take the new task force seriously. That is until they discover that the crimes occurring around Glenview are more out of this world than they ever expected. The misfit crew soon find themselves the only thing that stands between an alien force and global annihilation, and they haven’t got long to stop it.
With four such acclaimed comedians I did expect more from The Watch than I ultimately got, but these affable stars have an attractive camaraderie that really make this film enjoyable. The laughs belong to an on form Vaughn, and Brit sensation Ayoade (The IT Crowd, director of Submarine) who can hardly put a foot wrong lately.
A pleasant buddy comedy with an all star cast, The Watch is in cinemas now
