Be it the fashion, the food, or of course the men; there are oh so many Italian exports that hold a place close to my heart. With a history of what people in the industry like to call really good cinema, Italian film is, of course, one of them.
Luckily the Lavazza Italian Film Festival kicks off in Melbourne and Sydney tonight (before starting on a nation wide tour de force) so if you play your cards right, you might be able to surround yourself with all four.
Festival director Elysia Zeccola Hill has created a buonissimo line up for this year with over thirty films screening across five capital cities. Benvenuti al Nord (Welcome to the North) has taken official opening night honours from a tough crowd of contenders. The comedy is the follow up to Benvenuti al Sud (Welcome to the South) the box office sensation of 2010. Postal worker Alberto (Claudio Bisio) is transferred back to Milan with a promotion, and this time his Campagnian friend Mattia (Alessandro Siani) is along for the ride. North/South stereotypes again abound in one of the best performing Italian films of the year.
You might also want to check out Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love which is showing in special preview screenings. With an all star cast including Judy Davis, Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, and Jessie Eisenburg; the romantic comedy of errors entwines four stories centred around the eternal city. If nothing else it’s a chance to see Allen himself on screen again. But we think you will find many more reasons to enjoy this one!
Italian cinema: two words that have a perfect synonymousness don’t you think? We can’t wait for this one. We’ll see you there!
