Book Review: The Sex Myth: Why Everything We’re Told Is Wrong, Dr Brooke Magnanti

If there’s one word that can get everyone talking, it’s sex. From the get go, The Sex Myth: Why Everything We’re Told Is Wrong is sure to have your completely undivided focus.

Written by Dr Brooke Magnanti, more familiarly known as Belle de Jour, ex-call girl, author of salacious memoirs and the inspiration for the TV series Secret Diary Of A Call Girl the book is the perfect mix of exciting and educational.

Brooke uses her background as a scientist to explore the most common myths and questions about human sexuality: does sex addiction exist? Are children becoming sexualised younger? Should prostitution be banned?

The Sex Myth takes just about everything you believed to be true about sex – rumours told by friends over coffee, parent’s off-handed explanations, general knowledge that everyone seems to hold and turns it all on its head.

Despite the obvious, in-depth, scientific and anthropological research that has gone into the formation of this book, the language is easy to tackle. Simple words, easy to digest statistics and often surprisingly biting and frank humour, it’s quite easy to forget you’re reading non-fiction. She also includes simplistic diagrams and graphs to clarify any of the more complex concepts she introduces.

It’s definitely not a read for a lazy Sunday morning, but it’s certainly a fresh and exciting look at the one topic we can’t stop talking about.
