Scarlett Johansson, Rooney Mara, Keira Knightley and Mia Wasikowska feature as cover girls for W Magazine’s November 2012 40th Anniversary issue as photographed by Steven Klein and styled by Edward Enninful.
Each star steps back in time; Rooney channels the 70’s wearing Prada silk and wool coat and dress, and embellished cotton poplin shirt and Albertus Swanepoel hat, Mia channels the 80’s wearing Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière wool jacquard bustier, Scarlett channels the 90’s wearing Dolce & Gabbana silk lace dress and silk and lace bodysuit and Keira channels the 2000’s (or naughties as we called it) wearing Chanel braided tweed jacket.
Inside they shared:
Scarlett on her favorite person from the 90s: “Chris Farley. I thought he was hilarious. Growing up, I used to watch Saturday Night Live just to see him. He threw his whole body into the parts he played: He’d become red and sweaty and frantic. When he died, it was really significant for me.”
Keira on fashion trends of the 2000s that she dislikes: “I think skinny jeans and micro-miniskirts are very unfriendly. I’ve been known to wear both, but on some days it seems like they were invented to make you feel bad about yourself.”
Mia on who she feels embodies the 1980s the most: “Madonna. She’s the icon. She’s wholly her own person.”
Rooney on her favorite 1970s film: “Paper Moon. I saw it only last year. David [Fincher] made me watch it, and I think I’ve seen it five times since then… I love that ending—it’s not too happy-happy.”
