Darius (Aubrey Plaza) was happy as a child. Since then, her life hasn’t been all rainbows and unicorns. She’s unhappy, and working as an unpaid, unappreciated intern for a Seattle newspaper, her career path doesn’t look much brighter. But a unique ad in the local paper is about to change her future, and perhaps her past.
The ad seeks a fellow time traveler; the only prerequisite is to bring your own weapons, for safety is not guaranteed.
Darius sets off with her boss Jeff (Jake Johnson), and fellow underappreciated intern Arnau (Karan Soni), to track down the ad’s writer. Their search leads them to a small town on the coast where they meet Kenneth (Mark Duplass). Paranoid, just a little bit special, and convinced he has built a time machine, Kenneth is suspicious of Darius and her motives. When he takes her into training she begins to see a different side to this unique man, and wonders just how crazy he might really be.
Smart, funny, and entertaining, Safety Not Guaranteed, directed by Colin Trevorrow, is what most movies attain to be. Plaza’s deadpan humour and Duplass’s conviction will take viewers off the beaten track in this enjoyable film.
Seeking a fellow time traveler? Then brush up on your martial arts and write to Kenneth.
