Christopher McQuarrie wrote the screenplay taken from Lee Child’s famous book character Jack Reacher and the storyline follows the originally titled novel One Shot. Amidst the speculation of who would be playing this dark and mysterious role, Tom Cruise at 5’7” seemed a long shot at Jack Reacher who is 6’5” which made Hugh Jackman and Will Smith more likely candidates. However, I LOVE Tom in this role! I think he is perfect for it! Despite some of the mixed reports about Tom’s exploits, his acting is top notch! The guy is an absolute star!
US Army Police Major Jack Reacher (Cruise) is brought back into the mix when a former colleague piques his interest surrounding the mysterious killings of innocent victims by an expert sniper. Barr (Sikora) is quickly arrested for the crime and has only one request, get Jack Reacher. By the time Jack arrives to meet his lawyer Helen (Pike) the scene has changed and already something seems fishy about this slam dunk case!
What follows is Jack Reacher’s unique style of investigation that breaks all the rules and somehow finds all the answers. The supposed unconnected killings may have some meaning, but can Jack and Helen find out before time is up? There’s an element of danger as the very scary Zec (Herzog) is somehow involved making it difficult to work out why.
Helen’s father is also the District Attorney which is a double edged sword as their relationship is somewhat strained and seems to be hindering the investigation rather than helping it. Is he a concerned father or a politically motivated mover and shaker? Only time will tell and the ruthless and often careless Reacher isn’t helping the situation.
There are some classic lines in this as Reacher definitely has a great sense of humour. He’s a loner, has no friends, no family and apparently only one set of clothes, so he has to do his washing quite regularly. I have to say that Tom Cruise is looking great. He has a fit body and his face just doesn’t age. I don’t think he’s doing any surgery, or if he is… good job!
I know some Child’s book lovers may find Tom Cruise an unlikely choice for this action thriller, but I think they got it right! It’s explosive, action packed and an absolute ride from beginning to end, so give it a chance book lovers. As for us regular movie peeps – put it on your holiday list to see this film – it’s fab!
