With Jesinta Campbell’s glowing review on the glamboyant cover of  Be Careful What You Wish For by Gemma Crisp, you’d think the book would be all bubble-gum sweetness and may indeed put some readers off.

I advise you if this is you. Don’t be put off. Grab this book.

What you’ll get, is a fantastic, page-turner. For those unaware, Gemma Crisp has been at the helm of magazines including Dolly & Cleo and is one of those editors who was out there to publish the issues that every woman is dealing with.

As a PR professional I deal with journalists, producers, bloggers and editors on a daily basis. This “inside view” of how one woman climbs her way to the top, really does put the industry into perspective (even if it is slightly exaggerated!).

So while, admittedly there has been some creative license used with the novel, it is more delicious than a Ladurée Macaron.

Central character Nina Morey is obsessed with magazines (a quality I can identify). Not only the content but the writers behind them, (again something I can identify with!). When Nina secures the opportunity to enter the fantabulous world of magazines, she doesn’t look back and begins her meteoric climb to the top.

It seems like everything is too good to be true. While on a career high she manages to snag a SNAG and enjoy the fabulous perks of working in magazines – lunches at Aria thrown by beauty PR companies to spruik their client’s latest product, cosmetics by the truckload and concert tickets to see the hottest US performer, just a few of the generous bonuses!

As the saying goes “What goes up, must come down”. And down it does. I’ll leave it at that as I don’t want to ruin the book for you.

Gemma’s transition from magazines to books is seamless. Bravo Gemma.

For those who are curious if there’s more in the pipeline from Ms. Crisp, I tweeted Gemma to see if another book was in the wings, to which she replied “stay tuned”. That’s good enough for me, but hurry up please!
