Jennifer Hawkins‘ down to earthiness and love of life is truly infectious, and there are many lessons we can learn from her. Blessed with good looks, Jen hasn’t rested on her laurels and taken those good looks for granted, her motto in life is to work hard and be respectful of everyone who walks into her life whether it’s for a minute, an hour, six months or longer.
Jen is grateful, excited and content with her life right now, we spoke to her just after she finished her rehearsals for the Myer Autumn/Winter 2013 Fashion Show being held last week (February 28th) at the Mural Hall at Myer in Melbourne and got the goss on the key upcoming Autumn/Winter 2013 trends we must have in our wardrobes this season, some inside goss on her new JLH shoe collection that will be starting to drop in-stores this week, and some key tips on achieving your goals and what makes her laugh out loud.
Sassi: What are the key Autumn/Winter 2013 trends that we can look forward to and must put in our wardrobes?
Jen: I am loving anything leather, whether it’s pants, shorts, or jackets, they can be easily matched back with something sexy or casual. You can match the leather back with the lace trend that is strong this season, it adds a touch of beautiful femininity to your look. I’m also loving the peplum trend and vintage flora that’s still going strong and embellishments, adding them to your look can add a touch of elegant sexiness to it.
Sassi: Do you have some favourite pieces/designs/trends that you cannot wait to wear this season?
Jen: Yes, a great pair of jeans in either light or dark denim, they are really functional and can be teamed back with a casual t-shirt or feminine blouse with a blazer or bomber jacket worn over the top. A bomber jacket is a must have this season and I’m loving Nicola Finetti’s winter floral bomber jacket. I’m also loving ankle boots and stiletto points.
Sassi: Tell us about your new JLH Shoe Collection, what are you favourite shoe/s and key trends for this season?
Jen: I’m so excited to reveal this season’s new collection, I’m wearing some of my new designs in the show tonight. This season I’ve continued to focus on wearable shoes, comfort and what’s missing in my wardrobe. I love the design process, I sit down with my team and we go through all the different fabrics, styles, and embellishments we can use. And I have to say I’m loving the embellishment options this season, I’ve got some beautiful embellishments on the tips of some of my stilettos. I’ve also got some beautiful metallic heels in different sizes coming out, they add a touch of sexiness to your outfit, and I’m loving the ankle boot too, great for the winter months.
Sassi: You’re currently traveling around the country with Australia’s Next Top Model? How are you finding it? What are you loving about it? What key messages are important to you to get across to all the girls?
Jen: I’m just really loving the experience, we are working really hard, we’ve just finished four days of shooting 15 hour days which is just exhausting but it’s so rewarding seeing the end results. My key messages will evolve as the show goes on but I really want the girls to understand that being a model is not all glitz and glamour, you have to work hard and have a great work ethic. It’s not about ‘you’ the model, it’s about the brand you are working with and the team around you. It’s also important to me that they learn not only to be respectful of everyone around them but also for themselves.
Sassi: The rise of the female entrepreneur continues to grow at a rapid pace, why do you think that’s happening and why is it great for us?
Jen: I think it’s great that we are seeing more women entrepreneurs becoming successful. I think it’s the time of equality, we as women have much more confidence and support around us to be successful especially as an entrepreneur. There are so many women to be inspired by right now and definitely something that is easier to do today than it ever was. As women, we can do anything if we put our mind to it.
Sassi: What are your golden rules for success in achieving your goals?
Jen: It’s really important to have a strong brand essence and be structured with what you want to achieve. I write all my goals down and list the pros and cons of each goal, I get an understanding of why I want to achieve that goal, I research it and make sure it’s achievable and map out how I can achieve it. I also think it’s incredibly important to have the right experts around you to guide you, it’s okay not to know everything and it’s not smart business wise to do everything yourself, you can’t be everything. It’s important to know your strengths and play to those.
Sassi: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Jen: I’ve met plenty of inspiring people in my life, very successful business people, entrepreneurs but I am truly inspired by my parents. They taught me that the way you treat people is really important, what you give out is returned and will take you far.
Sassi: What was the last thing that made you really laugh out loud?
Jen: It was last night (Wed Feb 27th) and to be honest Jake is going to kill me for sharing this but we were in our hotel room and had ordered room service and we had just finished and Jake was pushing the trolley out to the corridor to be collected and I pushed him out into the corridor and shut the door and wouldn’t let him back in … of course I did eventually, but we love having fun and laughter in our relationship! (Thanks Jen for sharing your bit of adult-silliness Ellen would be proud!)
And you know the type of girl Jen is? She follows me on instagram, and she said she loves my pictures and words of wisdom that I share each day and she took the time to tell me that when she was on back-to-back interviews … thank you Jen for noticing and mentioning it to me, it means a lot!
