Lorraine Elliott, also known as Not Quite Nigella, the fabulous Aussie food blogger who has turned her love for food and life into a book. Not Quite Nigella is the most popular food blog in Australia and it’s because Lorraine is doing what she loves – writing and working with food – and that is exactly the reason why I was able to sit last Sunday afternoon under the shade of our frangipani tree enjoying the perfect blue skies and golden sunshine of the Queensland Autumn day, and devour her book from cover to cover in one afternoon.
Lorraine’s book is a memoir about her life with her “wonderful husband Mr NQN” before and after Not Quite Nigella. She shares her journey from a corporate job to what she defines as ‘the best job in the world’ – working with food. It talks about the highs and lows of her journey and she also shares a few of her favourite recipes. This is not a recipe book but I hope that we will see a recipe book from Lorraine one day soon.
I’ll be honest I didn’t expect to read it fully, just thought I’d flick through the pages reading it here and there but it was such a perfect afternoon, I was so relaxed and Lorraine’s words flowed effortlessly across the pages, I just kept turning the pages moving from one chapter to the next. It was such a joy to read.
What I loved about the book was the simplicity of Lorraine’s life built around her two lives, family and food and how her story is the perfect example of living life doing what you love and how it seamlessly comes together. Food blogging is tough, so much time, effort and money goes into it and it doesn’t help when you have the likes of giants like ACP threatening to sue you over a recipe you made (I’ve been there, I’ve received those threats, so I know how scary it is) and written about on your blog. But Lorraine turned that into a positive by changing the direction of her blog and that was the door that opened to her turning her brand into what it is today.
At the end there’s a chapter that talks about the business of blogging, Lorraine’s top two tips are; “content is king” and having a “decent camera.” That goes for any subject you want to write about, whether it’s fashion, beauty or food. Lorraine mentions along the way many times (I know and I agree), that it took her a long time for her to make money from her site, she too started before it was a big thing here in Australia, and you can’t rely solely on one income stream, in her words “make money from your blog not on your blog” and I couldn’t agree more.
This book is an absolute joy to read, it truly shows you have to do what you love, there’s no other way to live life – be inspired by Lorraine’s story!
You can find Lorraine at her website Not Quite Nigella here … I have a few of her recipes “Pocketed” to make very soon, I can’t make many because she’s the Queen of Sugar and you know me, I’m the Queen of I Quit Sugar!
