As some of our favourite TV shows begin to wind up, you may be on the lookout for some new DVD series to keep you entertained. One excellent new release is the the much acclaimed period drama, Call The Midwife which has just released their second season on DVD.

If you didn’t catch Call The Midwife during its run on ABC, it is a gorgeous drama set in impoverished London in the 1950s. The story follows Jenny Lee, a newly qualified midwife, who works in Nonnatus House, a nursing convent. The Sisters of the convent, and the midwives help the community, and their jobs are of the utmost importance, as in their district alone, nearly 100 babies are born a month. Jenny and her fellow midwives cannot afford to crack under the pressure, when there are so many women and children who depend on them.

Call The Midwife is such a human story – between the thematic drama of Jenny and her band of nurses lives – their love, their heartbreak and their clashes, the individual, episodic stories of the young parents and children these midwives encounter are truly moving. From the couple, who struggle to understand a future for their disabled newborn, to illegal immigrants struggling with the pressures of motherhood amidst a tumultuous and racially volatile time.

The stories are sweet, and well and truly engrossing. The continuous storylines and gripping stories make Call The Midwife the perfect show for the coming cold evenings, to snuggle up and hit play. Fans of Mad Men will love the period style romance, while medical drama lovers with get a kick out of old-school medical practices.
