Have you got a sweet tooth that just can’t be satisfied? Do you always do a double take when you walk past a bakery window? Then you’re sure to love Delia Smith’s new book, Delia’s Cakes.

Delia Smith is a bestselling author and a household name with a whole slew of classic cookbooks under her belt and we have been long-time fans of Delia’s since we were introduced to her 17+ years ago when living in the UK (we have about five sitting on our bookshelf). Delia’s Cakes is the newest in that range, a re-invention of one of her most beloved cookbooks published originally in the 1970s. The new book contains some old favourites (like Swiss Rolls and Victoria Sponges) as well as some fantastic and mouth-watering modern classics.

The book has undergone a total makeover since its original publication, and now includes pages of gorgeously shot images that jump straight off the page good enough to eat. Delia has also included bits and pieces she’s picked up along the wage, incorporating new recipes, new ingredients and new ideas. For example, we love that over 90% of the recipes in the new edition of this book have been tested gluten free!

You’ll be hard pressed flicking through this book without harbouring a craving for cake. From the comforting and old fashioned like Coffee and Walnut Sponge to exciting new flavours such as Spiced Date and Sesame Crunchies. We love the way the book was set up – you can simply flick through and pick a recipe that takes your fancy, or use the handy dividing chapters, if you have a special occasion in mind. Delia has split the book up into different kinds of cakes (think Sponge Cakes, Loaf Cakes and Family Cakes), Muffins, Biscuits, Dessert Cakes as well as an inspiring section on Cakes for special celebrations.

As you know we love to keep our sugar intake to a minimum, and we turned one of Delia’s recipes into a lovely sugar free version. We made the Whole Oat Crunchies on pg 165. We used raw organic oats, some rice malt syrup and natvia powder, as well as adding some sesame seeds to it.  Because we used rice malt syrup instead of the sugar, we had to add additional oats to the recipe and they turned out incredibly delicious.

Ingredients we used: 150gm raw organic oats, 1/2 cup rice malt syrup, handful of sesame seeds, 50gm natvia, 110gm butter.

Our Method: It’s really simple to make, just mix the natvia and oats together (we’re going to try this without natvia next time as the rice malt syrup has enough sweetness). Then melt the butter and rice malt syrup (don’t brown or boil), mix through the oats and sesame seeds until they are blended. If the mixture is too liquid, keep adding oats until it looks like the oats have soaked up most of the liquid. Then put the mixture into a prepared tin and pop in the oven for about 20mins or until it starts going golden brown. Then take it out of the oven and pop it into the fridge until it cools down and is nice and set, cut into 12 slices and voila, a yummy good for you snack to go with your afternoon cuppa.

And for those who have a total fear of their kitchen, Delia’s recipes are all fantastically simple. Her recipes only ever include a few ingredients, and she steps you through the entire process with a clear and precise voice. Even the most amateur chef could try their hand at any of Delia’s recipes.

For the ordinary Aussie, the name Lorraine Pascale doesn’t mean much. Yet.

Former model, turned celebrity chef, Lorraine Pascale has brought the fun back into cooking. After training in renowned kitchens all over the world, she took her own, fresh approach to cooking by launching a new TV series.

Home Cooking Made Easy

After long workdays, coming home and cooking seems like the last thing you want to do. So often we turn to costly and unhealthy takeaway menus. This book alleviates the issue, aiming to provide stress-free, simple cooking that covers every day meals, all the way to the inevitably hectic Christmas dinner. The recipes include comforting British classics, quick and simple pasta dishes and even some great vegetarian recipes.  No home-cooked meal would be complete without desserts, and the book includes an amazing array of classic desserts you would recognise from childhood meals. While the recipes aren’t all original, there are definitely some fun takes on old classics that are still worth a look at. The book itself is beautiful and the beginning of each chapter includes a beautifully shot image as well as an inspirational quote about cooking, which adds a lovely, homey touch to the book.

We made the Rioja-Braised Lamb Shanks on page 120 – we didn’t have roija, but used more of the balsamic vinegar which added a really lovely new flavour to a traditional dish that we could eat everyday!  Lorraine’s easy to understand instructions made it an easy dish to prepare and pop in the oven in a flash. Perfect for Sunday nights with the family.

We also made the Thai Green Chicken Curry on page 79, and to be honest it’s hard to go wrong with coconut curry dishes. Lorraine adds peas and aubergine to the mix which was different (I didn’t add the aubergine, not a fan), but we liked the peas.  Once again, easy instructions to follow.

Fast, Fresh and Easy Food

Lorraine’s latest book is by far our favourite of the three. It is the ultimate book for busy families, with easy to throw together, wholesome meals that everyone will enjoy. The book includes naughty treats like the adorable Watermelon Jelly Shots as well as delightful, fresh recipes like tin foil Thai Trout. There are meals that are kid-friendly as well as appetizers and mains that are perfect for friends who drop by. The beautifully shot photos are mouthwatering, and you can’t help but catch Lorraine’s contagious enthusiasm for cooking.

My first love for cooking came when I was living in the UK many many years ago, they know how to do good home cooking really well (it’s expensive to eat out there) and these books stick to well worn path of good yummy and easy home cooking, I’ll be keeping an eye out for her TV Series!

Sassi: How did Black Chicken come about?

Chey: About 15 years ago while working in banking I discovered aromatherapy and was amazed by the potency of essential oils for healing. My new passion occupied my every thought. I read everything I could about oils and their properties and experimented day and night with the support of enthusiastic friends and family. My knowledge and experience grew day by day. I remember the day I learned if we put essential oils on our body, within 20 minutes they could be detected in the liver. This started me thinking, what ingredients are in the beauty products we use every day? When I learned just how toxic many of these products were, I knew in my heart I could create truly authentic products that heal, rather than harm.

Sassi: Where did the name come from, it’s very different!

Chey: Black Chicken Remedies is a name I chose to recognise healers of every sacred tradition who understood how to communicate with nature, how to extract the medicinal properties from plants and create powerful healing remedies for their communities. The legend of the Black Chicken (you can read it in full on our website) is a simple and interesting way of pointing people back to the historical significance of our ability to look at nature as our pharmacy. Australian Aborigines had a person they called the Ngangkari, whom another culture might call Sharman. This was a medicine man or woman who had a highly developed affinity with nature – routinely they would venture into forests or bush land and communicate with nature to be guided on which plants or herbs would be suitable remedies for their patients in their communities – these were very knowledgeable people who were often chosen very early in their lives to hold these valued positions. What they harnessed was often made into creams, salves, oils and a host of other applications in order to bring about cures to those that sort their help.

Sassi: Now tell us what is different about your products? You only have two at the moment, are there plans to release more products?

Chey: That’s simple … I started making these products for me so no expense was spared in the quality of ingredients I chose to include and that hasn’t changed what you are buying today. I’m committed to delivering products that reduce the chances of anyone developing chronic health conditions through their choice of skincare, which is why BCR products are proudly toxin free and 100% natural.

I have been very specific about the products we have made so far. The first two products replace the main daily routine of many people – applying moisturiser to your body (Love Your Body Oil) and to your face (Love Your Face Serum). What many people don’t think about is that most creams they apply daily to their bodies contain chemicals such parabens, sulphates, petrochemicals and fragrant oils. Our products are made from 100% natural ingredients so no chemicals are being absorbed into your bloodstream, only natural oils with therapeutic qualities. The Body Polish is next (due for release in October 2012) and so far in our trials its been a big hit. It assists with detoxification and removal of dead cells plus replenish it with great oils.

Sassi: The rise of natural and organic products (are yours certified organic?), the messages around what we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put in them, what are the key points do you think we need to understand why it’s important to know what we are putting on our skin?

Chey: Both our body oil and face serum are 100% natural and our face serum contains 90% certified organic ingredients. I think it’s important to check the ingredients on the products we put on our skin because it’s proven that they end up in our bodies. For example parabens – a common chemical preservative – has been found in breast cancer tissue so I would never buy anything with these type of harmful chemicals. As mentioned above, during my Aromatheraphy studies, we learnt when we put essential oils on our body, within 20 minutes they could be detected in the liver, that’s a fast turn around time by the body. We think it’s super important that everyone has a better understanding and of course being conscious about what we put on our skin.

Sassi: Oils, I love putting oils on my skin, but like good fats, people can think oils and fats make you fatter, and skin wise, make your skin oily, I put oil on my face every night, can you explain why oils on our skin are good for us?

Chey: Let me clear up a couple of myths around using oils:

• Myth#1 is Oils make you oily – Oils don’t necessarily make you oily. Some oils, Jojoba for example, will recreate your skin’s natural lipid barrier and help retain the water in your skin from evaporating. It’s a dry skin remedy.
• Myth#2 is all oils are equal – This is also incorrect some oils harm and some oils heal. It’s important to use good quality oils but some skin care products use Mineral oil, which is produced as a byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. It’s very inexpensive and causes the pores to clog and I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t want anything that comes from gasoline to be absorbed into my body!

100% natural oils repair the skin because they contain vitamins and use nature as our pharmacy. For example: Cellulite can be aided by Geranium essential oil as it works as an effective diuretic and is able to improve circulation of lymphatic fluid, which helps eradicate toxins. Stretch marks and scars can be assisted by Rosehip oil as it contains Retinol, vitamin C, omega-3, omega-6 and linolenic acid. Eczema can be assisted with oils such as Lavender essential oil as it is anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial so it helps reduce inflammation and prevents infection. Nature is our pharmacy and can help us put back into our skin what life has taken out.

Sassi: Serums, they are everywhere, what’s the go with serums and why should we be investing in a good serum? What’s the difference between a natural/organic serum and synthetic serum?

Chey: The molecules in face serums are smaller than moisturisers and so they can penetrate much deeper and deliver nutrients and antioxidants to the skin and help address specific issues such as wrinkles, dehydration, sagging skin and redness. They absorb faster, go deeper and act quickly. So its like comparing serums to your specialists while moisturisers are your GP. Most moisturisers contain chemicals whereas serums can be made from 100% natural and organic ingredients. Serums are popular right now because people are looking for ways to address their special skin concerns in an effective and 100% natural way.

Sassi: Your top five tips for looking after your skin that we can start doing now.

Chey:

1. Keep hydrated – drink plenty of water at least 2 litres a day. The body is about 50% water so the cells need to be kept hydrated – this will show in your skins health and it’s easy to do!
2. Exfoliate 3 times per week to remove dead skin cells to keep the skin fresh and aid regeneration of cells. We shed about 1 million cells per day so skin brushing and exfoliation will help keep the skin soft and smooth.
3. Moisturise regularly. All skin types need and love moisture – the skin needs to be nourished whether oily or dry to retain a happy balanced protective layer
4. Protect your skin from the elements – skin needs to protect you so you must protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. A minimum spf 30 is required daily to ensure you will not burn or age or damage your skin even on cloudy days
5. Be present – so many people can be automatic when it comes to their daily skin routine and by applying focused energy, like being mindful, can make a significant difference in how we feel and how we experience changes in our body and who we are from the inside and out. Its why our first products are called Love Your Body and Face!

Sophia Banks-Coloma has been hailed as Australia\’s top fashion export and been labeled the Aussie Rachel Zoe. With international success as an highly established creative director, designer and stylist; recognised by Forbes as one of its Top Ten Undiscovered Designers on the rise in 2009, and Harpers Bazaar Style leader two years running, it seems the world is her oyster.

Her love with fashion began when she was just seven-years-old! She recalls:

“At about age 7 I used to buy Vogue Bambini and I forced my mum to buy an outfit for me from a French store in Killara. It was a purple skirt with matching purple and green polka dot socks and top. From then on I had to color coordinate everything I wore on the weekend!”

From there Sophia enrolled in fashion drawing classes, leading to roles such as design assistant for Marcs kids wear and assistant stylist for Vogue Bambini. Those then led to designer for boho chic fashion label, McGinn, and fashion editor for Shoplift magazine.

Her taste has since changed from when she was 10 though (yes, she was 10 when she first started to sketch!).

“At that age, everything I drew was magical, pink and outrageous. Princess ball gowns and fluffy skirts. Now, my taste has definitely matured and I love the sleek lines of designers like Celine and Stella McCartney.”

Since then, Sophia became co-owner of award-winning Hollywood hotspot Satine Boutique, styling celebrity clientele including Blake Lively, Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. She would also often liaise with Racehl Zoe, offering her key fashion tips and trends! On Rachel, she said:

“She is definitely as great, fun and lively as she is on the show!”

In 2008 Sophia, keen to put her skills as a designer to full effect, launched contemporary label Whitley Kros. The label has since established itself as a celebrity favourite, worn by the likes of Katy Perry, Blake Lively, Taylor Swift and Kate Hudson, and featured on U.S reality TV show ‘The Hills\’. Testament to Sophia\’s eye for detail and the brand\’s innovative designs, Sophia was a semi finalist in the Ecco Domani Fashion Award and her collection was selected as a Mercedes Benz highlighted fashion show.

She is currently involved in the costume design for Syrup, (starring Amber Heard, Kellan Lutz and Shiloh Fernandez), which is due to launch in Australia in 2012.

Though she has styled for many celebrities, magazines and clients, her own favourite designer is the classic Coco Chanel because:

“& she was a rule breaker and changed fashion for women, even to this day. While I love trends and use them to provide influence for my work, I also love to go against them and make my clients stand out.”

Sophia\’s mantra is simple:

“Buy what flatters you, not just what is trendy. If you are uncomfortable in it, don\’t buy it; otherwise that is exactly how you will end up looking – uncomfortable.”

Sophia reckons the secret to good fashion sense is:

“Being willing to take risks but also wearing things that you feel great and comfortable. If you wear you outfit with confidence, you will never fall victim to fashion. Sometimes you just have to know when to skip a trend if it doesn\’t work for you.”

We also asked her what her favourite pieces from her wardrobe are, she shared:

“I have three outfits right now that I am absolutely in love with. The first is a navy lace long sleeve evening dress from The Row. The second, a shirt and pant combination from Celine. And finally a Stella McCartney burgundy suit. I also have burgundy pumps from Jimmy Choo and a burgundy bag from Celine – I can\’t get enough of that color for this season!!”

And for the budding stylists and designers out there, Sophia recommends you:

• Be true to your own creative vision
• Be willing to work harder and be more dedicated than anyone else
• Have a great attitude no matter what situation you may be in

Sophia sums up her style influences:

“I regularly travel between L.A, New York and Sydney, looking for new designers to offer my clients. I\’m a big supporter of the Australian fashion industry – there\’s so much talent out there that deserves global recognition. For me, Australia is still my home, and so I love taking Aussie designs back with me to the US.”

A delightful explosion of fruits and a dash of wood, Viva La Juicy (Woody Oriental, fresh, gourmand) is like summer in a bottle, making it a great fragrance for this season.  The Limited Edition Parfum showcases the fun, flirty, irreverent side of Juicy Couture, while presenting the brand\’s first-ever parfum which is one of the top 10 prestige fragrances in the US.

The bottle is gilded and distressed to vintage perfection with a three-step proprietary metallization process, used for the first time on fragrance bottles; it looks so cool!   The fragrance itself is made from a mix of mandarin orange, wild berries, honeysuckle, gardenia and creamy amber notes; playful, right?

The campaign features the divine Sasha Pivovarova as photographed by Inez & Vinoodh which I revealed back in July.  I also posted the launch event we had in Sydney, it was a very sexy affair and I recommend you visit the story if you haven’t already seen it!
